Apple Announces New Apple TV

Apple Announces New Apple TV

It was the worst-kept secret in streaming for the past few days, and now the rumors are confirmed. Apple has just announced their new Apple TV.

Apple TV announcement

The new Apple TV is envisioned as a home base for all of your apps, one that makes use of “powerful hardware” and a “Modern OS.” This emphasis on power and hardware makes sense, given that rumors had long pegged Apple TV’s price as higher than competition like Roku. Siri also seems to figure prominently in the new device, with Apple’s promotional video showing users making verbal requests to search for content.

The new Apple TV remote will have a touch surface, allowing users to interact with their device using just voice and touch. Apple TV will have cross-platform searching.

[Updated, 11:04 AM PDT]

Siri offers powerful seeking options. Users can say “skip ahead 5 minutes” or ask “what did he/she say?” For that second one, Siri will skip back 15 seconds and turn on closed captioning.

Siri will also answer questions during your viewing. You can ask about the film itself (“who stars in this?”) or about unrelated things, like sports scores. The new Apple TV will have plenty of app options, including familiar names like Netflix and Hulu as well as new games like the latest Guitar Hero. Useful apps like AirBNB’s are also available.
