Facebook to Release Video App for Fire TV, Other Platforms

Facebook to Release Video App for Fire TV, Other Platforms

There’s a lot that streaming boxes can do, but social media support has long been a weak point of devices like the Amazon Fire TV. But that’s changing thanks to efforts from Twitter and now Facebook, which will release a video app for the Fire TV, Apple TV, and Samsung Smart TVs.

Facebook described the new app in a blog post, saying:

With the app, you can watch videos shared by friends or Pages you follow, top live videos from around the world, and recommended videos based on your interests. You can also catch up on videos you’ve saved to watch later, as well as revisit videos you’ve watched, shared or uploaded.

The app is focused on video, so users hoping for a full Facebook experience on streaming boxes will have to wait – or sideload Facebook’s Android app on their Fire TV.

There’s no specific announcement regarding Roku, but the app will roll out to other, unnamed streaming device platforms at an unspecified future date.

Facebook isn’t the first social media company to bring their product to streaming boxes. Twitter debuted a similar video app last year in the hopes of drawing more viewers to its Thursday Night Football streams.
