HBO Partners With Facebook to Stream Two New Comedies

HBO Partners With Facebook to Stream Two New Comedies

HBO’s two newest comedies, Ballers and The Brink, just premiered on Sunday night. If you missed them, you can check them out on HBO’s apps, HBO Now and HBO Go, or you can head over to the site that snagged an exclusive streaming deal for the new shows.

Ballers is one of two new shows that HBO is streaming through Facebook

So which site inked the deal to stream the two new comedies? Hulu? Netflix? Amazon?

No: Facebook.

This is a huge move that signals Facebook’s continued interest in streaming video. The move lets HBO promote their show to legions of fans (the premier of Ballers is being hosted on the personal Facebook page of star and executive producer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, where it’s exposed to his nearly 50 million followers). It also builds Facebook’s streaming credentials. Facebook has already hosted pilots for a couple of Amazon Prime exclusives.

HBO has been down a similar road before, too – season two of their series Silicon Valley debuted on this past spring.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Facebook is going to become a competitor to Netflix or Hulu anytime soon (HBO and Amazon probably wouldn’t have made those deals if they thought Facebook was about to cut in on their business space). But it does demonstrate that Facebook is interested in carving out at least a small niche in the streaming business.
