Netflix will complete, restore, and release The Other Side of the Wind – a film co-written and directed by the legendary Orson Welles, who left the work uncompleted when he died in 1985.
Welles began work on The Other Side of the Wind in 1970. It stars John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, and Dennis Hopper, among others. The Other Side of the Wind takes a satirical look at Hollywood through the story of a legendary film director (Huston) who is attempting to make a mainstream comeback with one last masterpiece.
Welles, of course, was quite the legendary filmmaker himself. Among his many credits is Citizen Kane, widely considered to be the single greatest film ever made.
Netflix has acquired the global rights to The Other Side of the Wind. There’s no final version of the film yet, though, so it falls to Netflix to restore the footage and complete the project. They’ve brought on consultants who worked on the film with Welles in the hopes of getting it right.
When all is said and done, Netflix will have released a film that dates back decades before the company was founded, directed by the man who made the most famous movie of all time. Netflix sure has come a long way from the days when the most it could have done was send you a Citizen Kane DVD in the mail.
