Learn what our expert researchers and testers have found about HBO NOW along with several of the top HBO NOW alternatives.

HBO NOW is well-known because of its famous parent cable channel HBO. Additionally, HBO is beloved by many due to having addicting original series programming that keeps everyone coming back for more, as well as being a preferred option among its premium channel counterparts. But is HBO NOW worth it? Or, would you be better off with an HBO NOW alternative? Here are some HBO NOW facts and HBO Now alternatives. Let's see if it lives up to all the hype.

1. Hulu

Hulu and HBO NOW both have a parent company associated with them. However, they are both stand-alone streaming services. And, they both offer original series, hit movies, documentaries, sports, and more.

Hulu and HBO NOW both offer free trial periods. Hulu has a 30-day free trial, which is one of the longest in the industry. HBO NOW also has a free trial which is generally a week, but the free trial period could vary depending on the provider. HBO has HBO NOW which is its stand-alone streaming service. They also have HBO GO, which is an extension of their HBO subscription service. So you have to have an HBO subscription to use HBO GO.

With Hulu, you can stream one or two devices simultaneously, unless you pay $10 more per month for their Unlimited Screens feature that is only available with their Hulu + Live TV option. You can also opt to add HBO as an add-on to either of the Hulu plans. As far as HBO NOW goes, there is no definitive answer for how many people can stream at one time, but the majority of people are reporting three at once. Additionally, both HBO NOW and Hulu both offer live TV streaming, popular original series programming, and mobile playback.

Hulu's plans range between $5.99 per month and $44.99 per month, which is their Hulu + Live TV option. And HBO NOW has one plan and it's $14.99 per month. Another fun fact is that you can access your HBO NOW account through Hulu using your HBO Premium subscription, just follow the online instructions Hulu provides for you to do this.

Comparatively, Hulu's two lower-tier plans are similar in price to HBO NOW; however, the Hulu + Live TV option is quite a bit higher in price, but you will have the benefit of watching live TV in addition to its vast library of other programming.

2. Disney Plus

Disney Plus is going to be a bit different from HBO premium after it's released on November 12, 2019. This is because in addition to the Disney Plus standalone streaming service, Disney is planning on bundling its Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN+ services together for one very low price of $13 a month. So this is something to think about while looking for an HBO NOW alternative.

HBO and its components—HBO NOW, HBO GO, and their soon to be released (spring 2020) HBO Max, have plenty of streaming content to compete. However, it's not yet clear, whether HBO Max is intended to replace HBO NOW or not, so we'll have to wait and see.

As of right now, Disney Plus is not offering a free trial period, but it hasn't been released yet, so that remains to be seen. However, HBO NOW is currently offering a free trial, which is usually about a week, but that varies between providers. Additionally, HBO NOW and Disney Plus both offer mobile playback and have original content programming; however, only HBO NOW offers live TV streaming, Disney Plus does not, at least not yet anyway.

HBO NOW has one plan available and it's running $14.99 a month and their HBO GO is free because it's part of the HBO subscription service. The Disney Plus streaming service by itself is going for $6.99 a month and you can pre-subscribe now so you're ready for the launch date on November 12, 2019. The Disney Plus standalone subscription service is a bit cheaper than HBO NOW; however, once the Disney Plus triple bundle (Disney Plus, Hulu, ESPN+) is available at $12.99 a month, both options will be similar in price.

A Great Alternative to HBO NOW

3. Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is unique because it comes as a part of an Amazon Prime subscription. And the only way to get this streaming service is to sign up for Amazon Prime. However, the Amazon Prime Video service is very similar to other streaming services giving you access to a huge library of movies and TV shows across just about any category. Additionally, with the Amazon Prime Video service, you can buy or rent movies and TV episodes that are not included with the Prime streaming subscription, as well as having the option of subscribing to over 100 premium channels.

HBO NOW does come with a free trial of about a week. Amazon Prime Video also has a free trial as part of its Amazon Prime membership, which is a full 30-days to try it out before deciding. Additionally, the Amazon service also offers original movies and series, as well as mobile playback and live TV streaming. And, neither brand requires you to sign a contract or has any hidden fees.

As for the price, the Amazon Prime membership is $119 per year, which is $12.99 per month. Also, Amazon offers huge discounts to students so keep that in mind if you're a student. And, you also get all the other Amazon Prime benefits as well, not just the streaming service. The price of HBO NOW is currently $14.99 per month, so that comes out to a bit more than Amazon Prime's monthly price, but HBO has a huge variety of content from which you can choose.
