Cord Cutting Guides, News, and Reviews
Sometimes, the best products aren’t the ones with the most name recognition. These brands know they have to go further to earn your trust, which is never a bad thing for security software like virtual private networks (VPNs). StrongVPN isn’t a household name, but this company has been building VPN apps for over 15 years. In this article, we’ll examine all the features of StrongVPN, as well as its plans and pricing, to help you decide whether this is the right VPN for you.
StrongVPN has a particularly simple pricing scheme. Your only options are a monthly plan or an annual plan. The annual plan is 40 percent cheaper, but you’ll have to pay for the entire year in advance.
Aside from the price, the plans are nearly identical. The only other difference is that the annual plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee, whereas the monthly plan has no such guarantee.
Before we discuss StrongVPN specifically, let’s recap why you need a VPN at all. VPNs provide a secure, private browsing experience. They encrypt your personal data and make it difficult for online trackers to identify you.
When you’re using a VPN, websites and apps will see the location of the VPN server instead of your real location. That’s great for cord-cutters, because the movies and TV shows available on streaming services differ by country. A good VPN can give you access to Netflix’s United Kingdom library even if you’re sitting on a couch in San Diego. This trick works only with the best VPN providers since streaming providers often block known VPN traffic or cut VPN users off from geo-restricted content.
StrongVPN has over 950 VPN servers in more than 40 countries. Both of StrongVPN’s subscription plans include unlimited bandwidth and unlimited usage on up to 12 devices.
StrongVPN offers six VPN protocols. No device type has access to all of these options, but you’ll have at least three to choose from on any supported device. Importantly, StrongVPN’s apps offer IKEv2 and WireGuard, two highly secure options, on every operating system. OpenVPN, another excellent option, is available on every device except iPhones.
Kill switches are an important privacy feature for VPNs. Put simply, they ensure that all of your internet traffic pauses if your VPN fails. Without a kill switch, any failure in your VPN would result in your traffic going out unprotected across your standard internet connection until the VPN is restored. StrongVPN has kill switches for all of its desktop apps, but the feature is missing from Android, Fire TV, and iOS.
StrongVPN’s Android and Fire TV apps feature split tunneling. This feature allows you to selectively funnel traffic from some apps through the VPN while allowing other apps to use your raw internet connection. If you have some apps that aren’t compatible with your VPN or need accurate location data, split tunneling is an excellent balance between security and usability.
StrongVPN has dedicated apps for all of the standard desktop and mobile operating systems. Your options for streaming devices are more limited. Unless your chosen streaming device is Android-based (Android TV, Fire TV), you won’t find StrongVPN in your app store. StrongVPN also lacks apps for video game systems (PS5, Xbox Series X, etc.).
If you want to protect devices that don’t have dedicated apps, you’ll need to install StrongVPN on your router to protect the entire network. Here’s the current list of devices that do have dedicated StrongVPN apps available:
StrongVPN currently offers a one-year 45% discount for new annual plan customers. That discount brings your first payment down to $43.99. After the first year, the price will be $79.99 per year.
That deal is currently the best option available to save money on StrongVPN. However, we’ll update this section if StrongVPN adds any other deals in the future. Bookmark this page and check back often to find the latest discounts.
StrongVPN doesn’t offer a free trial, nor does the service have a free tier. Instead, StrongVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee to those who subscribe to the annual plan. The monthly plan has no money-back guarantee.
Most VPNs don’t require contracts anymore. StrongVPN is no exception, so you don’t have to worry about being locked into the service beyond the period you choose to pay for (one month or one year).
With the annual plan, remember that you are paying in advance for the VPN service. You’ll have 30 days to cancel under their money-back guarantee. After that, you can still cancel at any time, but don’t expect to get any part of your payment back.
Canceling StrongVPN is very easy. From the StrongVPN homepage, just click “ACCOUNT” in the menu bar. Then, click “VPN Accounts” in the account page menu bar and select “Cancel Request Form” from the drop-down menu. On the cancel page, click the checkbox for the subscription you want to cancel and then click “Cancel Marked.” You may or may not be redirected to a verification page, so just click through if that happens.
If you cancel an annual subscription within 30 days, you should automatically qualify for the money-back guarantee. The refund should take one to two days to process, so contact their support number if you don’t receive it after a few days. You can also click the new “Submitted Cancel Requests” option in the “VPN Accounts” dropdown to check the status of your cancellation request.
Now you have everything you need to compare StrongVPN to all the best VPN apps. Since StrongVPN doesn’t have a free trial, we tried it out for you in our hands-on StrongVPN review.
