VPNs like Surfshark are a smart way to protect your privacy online. A VPN essentially encrypts and re-routes your internet traffic, hiding your location and keeping trackers from following you. And there are a plethora of VPN services out there, each promising a long list of features that’ll help keep your data safe. Surfshark is one such service, and today, we’re going to be looking at everything Surfshark has to offer: Its features, plans and pricing, contracts, and more.

What Do I Get With Surfshark?

Surfshark a VPN service provider, and it offers pretty much everything that you’d expect from a VPN. Surfshark encrypts the data you’re transmitting back and forth, it ensures no one can see what you’re doing online, and it lets you connect to servers in other countries.

Surfshark Regions

That’s all pretty standard, but Surfshark does have some other bells and whistles that help it stand compared to other VPN services. For instance, a feature called “CleanWeb” completely blocks ads and trackers. That same feature also shuts down malware before it can do you any harm. Another feature, called “Whitelister,” lets you carefully manage what the VPN blocks and doesn’t block. Sites that you “whitelist” will be let through. Surprisingly, not all of Surfshark’s competitors offer similar features.

As far as servers are concerned, Surfshark doesn’t look to have quite as many as some competing providers. That said, a lot of those other companies beef up their numbers by offering multiple servers in the same country. Surfshark has over 1,700 servers in 63 countries, which is still a pretty large footprint.

  • “CleanWeb” feature blocks ads, malware, and more
  • Ability to whitelist sites
  • Unlimited devices
  • “No logs” policy

What Can I Watch Using Surfshark?

It probably won’t come as a surprise that some people use VPNs to watch their home country’s version of Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video from abroad. It’s also not a surprise that streaming services tend not to like this. Streaming companies have contracts that keep certain TV shows and movies locked to certain regions. VPNs — because they route traffic through servers in different countries — get around this obstacle.

Surfshark is pretty coy about using its product for this purpose. If you browse through the service’s official website, you’ll have trouble finding any pages that mention streaming video at all. These pages do exist, however, even though Surfshark is careful to avoid linking to them from their homepage. According to Surfshark, you should be able to use its VPN service for Netflix, ESPN+, Hulu, Disney Plus, and just about any other streaming video service you can think of — a claim that we put to the test in our Surfshark review.

How Private Is Surfshark?

Since VPNs are designed for privacy, we don’t want our VPN service provider to keep logs of everything we do while connected to their VPN. If the websites you visit and the files you download are stored somewhere, who’s to say a hacker won’t eventually get their hands on that information someday?

Fortunately, Surfshark — like many other VPN providers — operates on a strict “no logs” basis. Your browsing history isn’t tracked. Your session information is secret forever. Your network traffic is never recorded or examined. Even the amount of bandwidth you use, or when you connect and disconnect, isn’t logged at all. When you’re using a VPN service, that’s how it should be. Of course, we only have Surfshark’s word for this, and other services have been caught lying about their logs. But VPN services have a lot to lose by gambling with their reputations for privacy, and Surfshark has a good reputation to defend.

What Devices Does Surfshark Work On?

What good is a VPN service if you can only use it on some of your devices? That’s a problem you might run into with some providers. Luckily for us, Surfshark has gone to great lengths to ensure just about every machine we own can be protected.

How Much Does Surfshark Cost?

How much Surfshark costs all depends on whether you’re willing to shell out more cash up front to pay for an extended subscription.

Plan Price Monthly equivalent
1 Month $12.95 $12.95
6 Months $38.94 $6.49
24 Months $59.76 $2.21

One month of Surfshark’s VPN service will cost you $12.95, which is right in line with some of the higher-priced one-month packages from other providers. Subscribe for six months, however, and the price goes way down: You’ll pay $38.94, which is the equivalent of $6.49 a month. Finally, if you’re able to pay for two years up front, you can nab a subscription to Surfshark for an upfront payment of $59.76 — which works out to be a mere $2.21 per month.

Deals on Surfshark

We always keep our eye out for deals on VPN services. As of this writing, your best bet for saving big on Surfshark is to sign up for a longer-term deal, like the impressive two-year bundle that will net you Surfshark for a fraction of the usual monthly price.

How to Get a Surfshark Free Trial

A lot of VPN providers seem to be going the route of providing money-back guarantees in place of free trials, and Surfshark is one of them.

This makes it tough to try out Surfshark for free, but it does provide a nice safety net. If you really don’t care for Surfshark, you can contact the company and get your money back. Surfshark’s money-back guarantee covers you for 30 days.

Does Surfshark Require a Contract?

Surfshark doesn’t require you to sign a contract of any kind prior to starting up service. That’s pretty standard for a VPN service, though there are a few exceptions.

Since you’ll pay up front for a Surfshark subscription, canceling Surfshark really just means disabling an auto-renew feature. Your cancelation will take effect at the end of whatever period that you last paid for.

How to Cancel Surfshark

To cancel Surfshark, you’ll need to contact their customer service department. One easy way to do that is to log into your account on Surfshark’s official website, then use the customer service chat feature. You can also email Surfshark’s team at support@surfshark.com. Either way, be sure to tell them that you want to cancel auto-renewal. If you’re canceling within 30 days of signing up, you should also ask about Surfshark’s money-back guarantee.

Is Surfshark Worth Getting?

Surfshark is a very popular VPN service, but is it the right choice for you? We’re pretty picky, so we found a few things to complain about in our Surfshark review (Surfshark has fewer servers than some competitors, for example). But we found it tough to ignore how cheap that two-year plan is, especially since Surfshark is a very straightforward and useful VPN service. Whether or not this is the best VPN service for you will ultimately come down to how you plan to use it.
