Thanks for the review. It seems worth mentioning that if you have a tuner-free (eg, Visio) TV, the AirTV and OTA adapter would work well. Guess they will not offer local DVR features for OTA since would prefer to sell their cloud DVR service. Reply
Nice review – instructive. I especially like the fact that the local channels show up on Sling TV without a hitch! Thanks for the information. Reply
I’m new to cutting the cord for 3 weeks now and couldn’t be happier to rid myself of over paying for a steady stream of LIES, MISINFORMATION & PROPAGANDA. I had fiber optic internet come to my neighborhood and jumped all over it, it was cheaper, better & faster than Time Warner internet. I was more than pleased to return Time Warner’s gear to them and have to explain why when they asked. I’m also saving $1100/year. First thing we did was get Sling TV and took them up on the offer of the AirTV Player, USB Tuner & an amplified antenna for $70 with a prepaid 3 month subscription. The AirTV Player works great and I love how it integrates the OTA channels into the Sling guide. I love that we get the YES Network and I can record the games to watch when we get home and that I can cast my Chromebook to my TV through the AirTV player. The only downside is not being able to record the OTA channels with their cloud DVR service, that would be a great feature even though we don’t watch much TV except for local news. I’m doing my research and looks like a Tablo will accomplish what I need. Thanks for what you guys do here sharing information. Reply
Cut my cord yesterday! Going to sign up for Sling. They offer both the AirTV Player and the Roku Ultra for $50. Trying to figure out which is better. Sounds like the Ultra unless I want the OTA feature which does sound attractive. Love to hear any thoughts/advice. Reply
Clay – what direction did you end up going with? I’ve got an older Roku 3 I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the AirTV (because of the OTA integration) and have seriously been thinking of it for awhile now. Reply
I recently tried to cut the cord and had chosen AirTv as a realistic way to do that. I ordered the AirTV device along with an antenna adapter. I received the device and it didn’t work. I returned the device and was sent a replacement. The replacement didn’t work either. I have since bought a Roku device… with no problems. It appears the parent company Dish Network has no clue what is happening with their business. Representatives at AirTV could care less and I returned it all. I used Dish products in the past with no problem, but this is not the same company as Dish. Reply
The AirTV quite frankly sucks! Love that your local stations come on the same remote but that’s the only good thing about it. The AirTV constantly locks up, buffers like crazy, goes in and out of TV and Netflix! You’re sitting there watching a show and it goes to Netflix? WTH! This is a short version of what’s wrong with the device, it’s worthless, DON’T BUY IT FOLKS! Reply
I am in the process of cutting the cord on cable. I have until 1/20 to get it together, keeping the internet but changing cable TV and phone. Going to use Sling TV. I was going with Roku, but in reading all the reviews I now don’t know what to do. The AirTV Player looks good but wonder what is the best. Watch local news, the Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, and Nascar. Reply
Yes, it will! When you boot it up and it asks for your Sling TV credentials, look for the option to bypass that and use a free account (no Sling TV included, of course) to log in. But, as I mentioned in my review, there are other streaming boxes that may suit you better — especially if you’re not a Sling TV fan. Reply
It states the article was updated 9/5/19. If that’s the case, the misstatement about the price being less than a Roku Ultra should be corrected; it’s been the same price for a year now. Also, the new model (due Oct 13) will be the same price. Reply
I cut the cord 3 months ago and went with the Sling package that included the AirTV, and a HD antenna. The cable channels are mostly fine. However, I can’t get most of my local channels very well or at all with the antenna that they sent me. I also have frequent lock ups. I didn’t know if that was Sling or the AirTV until I saw Patrick’s review from November 2017. Two years and they haven’t fixed that problem???? I’m not wanting to crawl up on my roof to put an old time antenna to get the local channels, and this system likes to go out int he middle of movies and World Series games. I’m pretty close to going back to cable. The $40/month savings is starting to not be as attractive. Reply
AirTV is terrible. The buffering needs substantial work. If I connect my antenna directly to my TV, the OTA experience is fairly seamless (unless we’re in the middle of a snow storm.) If I connect it to my AirTV, the quality is unwatchable. – The media stops every few minutes. It locks up constantly. – The picture quality is TERRIBLE. DO NOT BUY. Reply
