Despite its steady acclimation to the mainstream, animation continues to place second behind its live-action counterparts in terms of recognition and praise. Committees often condense the entire industry into a singular category within the awards space. Sometimes overlooked as a medium intended for children, animation’s brimming catalog challenges this notion with diverse stories and rich lessons.

For the past 51 years, one organization has led the movement responsible for honoring the hard work put forward by these teams. The Annie Awards are dedicated exclusively to the achievements and accomplishments of animation as series, shorts, feature films, and other mediums. Smaller studios have been working overtime to find a way to contest Disney and Pixar’s hold on the throne and the results have been nothing short of revolutionary. This year’s nominees have delivered groundbreaking developments in style and story.

You can catch the Annie Awards online — keep on reading to find out how.

Last year’s event included notable animation icon Tom Kenny (“SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Adventure Time”) as a presenter. Who knows what surprise guests and presenters we’ll have at the awards ceremony this year?
