Live TV Streaming Services Channel Comparison

Live TV Streaming Services Channel Comparison

We’re living in the golden age of cord cutting. Cutting cable has always made financial sense, but it has never been easier for cord cutters to cheaply replace the content they lose when they cancel their legacy pay TV service. We’re not just talking about watching movies and TV show episodes on demand, here: we’re talking about live TV. Thanks to the rise of live TV streaming services, or “skinny bundles,” you now have a ton of options for streaming live TV on your favorite streaming devices, including the smart TVs and set-top boxes that you use to put your favorite shows and movies up on your big, beautiful TV. In fact, you almost have too many options! There are a whole lot of skinny bundles running around, and they can all kind of blur together after a while. That’s why we’re here to lay out the differences between them. Today, we’re focusing on channels: what can you watch on one service, but not another? Which service is best for sports fans, and which has the most local TV channels? It’s all laid out below in our live TV streaming services channel comparison.

Skinny Bundle Channel Lists, Compared

We’ll analyze the differences between the major skinny bundles and their available channels extensively, but let’s start with a raw data. Are you ready for a really, really big chart? Below, we’ll list out all the channels that you can get from all of the skinny bundles on the market right now. We’ll designate which services each channel is available on. You can scroll down to look for your favorite channels, or you can just take in the general trends. (By the way, if you’re looking for specific channels, check out our “How to Watch…” series!) Whew, that was a lot of data! What should we make of it? Well, let’s discuss. We have a lot to talk about, so we’ll break things up into categories below.

Local Channels

First up: local channels. As you may know, no skinny bundle can claim to have every local channel for everyone in the country. The major networks that carry your local news broadcasts – ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC – have a messy situation at the local level, where some affiliates are owned outright while others are are owned by different companies and operate as affiliates of a given network under a business agreement. Since, for instance, CBS can’t just sell the rights to all of its local channels to a skinny bundle, this means that local channels are virtually always available in “select markets” only.

That means that it pays to check and see which skinny bundle would be best for local coverage in your area. But we can say some general things about the skinny bundles based on what channels they carry in any region.

For instance, Philo has no local TV coverage at all. That’s part of why it’s so delightfully cheap, but it might be a dealbreaker for you if you care a lot about local channels. Sling TV is missing CBS and relegates ABC to an add-on bundle. fuboTV lacks ABC, but does have Univision – only Sling TV and DirecTV Now can match them there.

Several skinny bundles have all four major networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC) in select markets: DirecTV Now, Hulu with Live TV, PlayStation Vue, and YouTube TV.

Regional Sports Networks

Speaking of local broadcasts, there was no way for us to fit all the regional sports networks into our chart. But the skinny bundles we’re talking about usually have some regional sports on offer: for instance, New Yorkers will find MSG, SNY, and YES in many skinny bundles.

Since availability here varies by both price and region, your best bet is to head to a skinny bundle website or check out a free trial. Your device’s IP address will determine what’s available for you. One thing that we can say for sure is that Philo has none of this: as you may recall, Philo has no local broadcasts and no sports, so this is a double-whammy situation for them.

National Sports Networks

It’s a little easier to break down sports availability as we hit the national level. The big dogs in sports broadcasting – ESPN, FS1, and NBCSN – are widely available in skinny bundles. But they’re not all available in all skinny bundles, so let’s investigate.

First up: Philo is out, once again. No sports in Philo. Sorry!

Next up: fuboTV. fuboTV is a curious case, because the formerly sports-centric skinny bundle (it once specialized in soccer before re-launching with a broader appeal) still retains a ton of great sports channels. But, surprisingly, it’s missing the ESPN family of networks! That makes fuboTV a solid but somewhat niche choice for sports fans. If you love foreign soccer leagues, you’ll love fuboTV – but if you want to focus on American sports, you won’t be as impressed.

These skinny bundles offer ESPN, FS1, and NBCSN: DirecTV Now, Hulu with Live TV, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV.

fuboTV makes a bit of a comeback with the league-specific channels. It offers NBA TV and NFL Network. No skinny bundles has all four major league networks (NBA TV, NFL Network, NHL Network, and MLB Network), but PlayStation Vue comes the closest: it’s missing only NHL Network, and it can give you NFL RedZone, too, in an add-on.

Premium Channels

Fans of great original programming will want to know which skinny bundles are best for premium channels like HBO. Let’s talk!

The big four premium networks – HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax – are available through Sling TV and DirecTV Now. DirecTV Now is particularly impressive here, thanks to its very low prices on the premium networks.

HBO – the clear top dog among premium channels – is available through Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue as well as the aforementioned Sling TV and DirecTV Now. That leaves YouTube TV and fuboTV out in the cold – and Philo, too, which has the dubious distinction of offering none of these premium networks.

Epix, a more minor premium network, is available through Sling TV but not through any of these other services.

Comparing Streaming TV Channels on Your Own

We’ve talked a lot about what you can (and can’t) watch on live TV streaming services. We’ve charted out all of the differences in channel counts between the major players, and we’ve taken some deeper dives into the pros and cons of specific skinny bundles for specific types of channels. But we still haven’t exhausted this subject completely, because there are still plenty of folks out there who care about channels we haven’t focused on intently.

But that’s okay – because you can still decide for yourself which skinny bundle has the best channel list for your needs. The services that we’ve discussed here all offer free trials. There’s no risk, so it’s easy to just sign up and test things out for yourself. Why not give one (or more) of these services a whirl? Just click the links below to get started.

  1. Which streaming TV service works with Chromebook? None of them seem to offer PBS – why? How does Roku work with all this?

    • Cordcutting.com | July 2, 2018 at 12:55 pm | Reply

You’re right that the live TV streaming services listed above don’t offer PBS, but all of them should work with Chromebooks through the Chrome browser and Roku devices.

  2. How can I find out some place just what I need to get live TV? I really don’t know much, but I don’t like paying the cable bill. Thank you.

You could check which live TV streaming services offer the channels that you’re interested in and test them for free. Also, we have a pretty comprehensive guide to cutting the cord here, if you’d like to learn more.

  3. TCM is available as an add-on with Sling TV.
