“‘Black Cake' landed last week with its first three episodes on Hulu, and I devoured them like a deliciously rich dessert. In all honesty, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this series, adapted from the novel of the same name by Charmaine Wilkerson. The drama genre appealed to me but I wasn't sure if the story would be twisty enough to pique my interest. To my delight, it's just the right balance of storytelling ingredients to make it mysterious and interesting. I wouldn't necessarily call it a thriller, but the subject matter itself is inherently dark, also offering a murder mystery, a heavy dose of melodrama, and character connections that captivated me enough to keep watching.”
